What is the proper/safest technique for handing someone a knife? Handle pointed toward them? Handle pointed up? Lay it on a table, and then let them pick it up? Many people ask these questions, if you do not handle a knife properly you can hurt yourself or others.
Passing the Knife Holding The Handle
While holding the handle with your fingers, cradle the spine of the blade in the web of your hand between the thumb and index finger. This allows the other person to safely grasp the handle. If the blade slides across the giver’s hand, the skin will come in contact with the spine, not the edge.
Here is a good video on how to use this technique.
Securing the Blade
Not all knives are automatic or folders, the obvious solution for those kind of knives would be to secure the blade inside of the body. After the blade is secured you can then pass of the knife to someone else.
Set the Knife Down
A technique that is safe is to set the knife down for the person to then pick up. This is a good idea if you are passing off a fixed blade knife.
